6 Winter Skin Care Tips

The cold blustering months are now upon us.  Although we may feel toasty in our warm homes, all that dry air can make our skin feel cracked and brittle. For many, dry skin can lead to painful irritated and inflamed areas.

So how do you keep your skin glistening and itch free this winter?

1. Moisturize: As weather conditions change, so should your skin care routine. Find a moisturizer that's oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin and will retain more moisture than a cream or lotion.

2. All Hands on Deck: The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it's harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.

3. Time to turn on the Humidifier: Central heating systems blast hot dry air through our homes. Humidifiers put more moisture in the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out. Placing several small humidifiers throughout the home will help disperse the moisture throughout your living space.

4. Hydrate:  Water helps to keep the skin from drying. Drink plenty of water and cut down on caffeinated and alcoholic drinks for optimum skin health.

5. Just Say No: Super-hot showers can feel great after a day out in the cold, but the hot water actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, causing it to dry quicker. Try a warm bath with oatmeal or baking soda to relieve irritated skin.

6. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants: Particularly if you have eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis, you have to avoid allergens and irritants that may trigger a flare up. Winter skin is more fragile, so avoid irritating fabrics (like wool) and chemical-laden detergents, and use mild cleansers and moisturizers designed for sensitive skin.

Now that you have the tools, go out and enjoy the weather, frolic in the snow and remember even in the winter months, use that sunscreen!
