Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

You’ve made the decision to get rid of that unwanted hair and throw away the razors and tweezers once and for all, but expectations for your Laser Hair Removal treatment can seem a bit daunting. Not to worry, this safe and effective procedure will change your grooming routine for the better and save your valuable time for pleasurable pursuits.  Before your appointment here are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure that your treatment goes smoothly.

Stay out of the Sun

Save the tanning for after your treatment area has healed.  A tan increases the risk for side effects, such as skin lightening. The skin should be as light as possible at the time of treatment. Apply sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 if you do need to spend time outdoors, and the area you wish to have hair removed by laser will be exposed to UVA/UVB rays. If you have a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning products wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal.

Avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis 2 4 weeks before your treatment.

These hair removal methods can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal. Avoid bleaching and depilatory creams.

Can I Shave

Shaving is perfectly fine and is recommended as the laser doesn't target hair above the skin. You may also trim the hair in the treatment area with a pair of scissors.

Clean the skin

Clean the skin at the treatment site and leave it free of cosmetics, lotions and creams. If you apply deodorant, it will be removed prior to treatment.

After the procedure

  • You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal.
  • After laser hair removal, avoid sun exposure, both natural sunlight and tanning beds. When your skin has healed, use sunscreen whenever you're in the sun.
  • You might also prepare yourself for possible hair shedding in the first few days and weeks after treatment.
